France and Guadeloupe face agricultural crises due to drought

Severe drought and heatwaves are causing significant agricultural declines in France and Guadeloupe.

In France, wine production for 2026 is estimated at approximately 33.9 million hectoliters, a 6% decrease from 2025 and a 17% drop from the 2021-2025 average. If confirmed, this would be the lowest production level since 1957. The decline is attributed to reduced vineyard areas and low yields caused by summer heatwaves and soil dryness. Additionally, the drought has impacted vegetable crops, potentially leading to higher prices for frozen and canned goods like peas and green beans.

In Guadeloupe, the sugar cane industry faces a crisis. Following a 35% drop in the 2026 harvest compared to 2025, planters are unable to replant due to extreme heat and lack of rainfall. The Union des producteurs de Guadeloupe notes that the current conditions prevent seedlings from being planted without risk of burning. The region continues to experience extreme weather, with July being one of the hottest months recorded since 1995.
