Guadeloupe: Two GIGN gendarmes wounded in Les Abymes police operation

Two gendarmes from the GIGN (Groupe d'intervention de la gendarmerie nationale) antenna in Pointe-à-Pitre were seriously wounded by gunfire during a police operation in Les Abymes, Guadeloupe, on Saturday evening.

The operation, which targeted individuals involved in armed robbery, involved approximately 100 gendarmes and 10 police officers, including mobile gendarmerie intervention squadrons and a Republican Guard platoon. One officer sustained a gunshot wound to the arm, while the other was shot in the leg, resulting in a likely fractured femur.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed that four suspects have been arrested. While the injuries are serious, a source within the gendarmerie stated that the lives of the two officers are not in immediate danger. Nuñez emphasized that authorities will not relent in the face of organized crime and gang violence.
