Guaira, Venezuela faces humanitarian crisis after June earthquakes

In June, a series of powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela's northern coast, devastating the city of Guaira. The disaster left roughly 24,000 people homeless and reduced much of the coastal strip to a sprawling humanitarian camp.

High‑rise residential towers collapsed into twisted rubble, and former tourist sites such as a McDonald's, a port, a golf course and a surf complex now serve as makeshift hospitals, morgues and shelters. Hundreds of buildings are damaged or destroyed, and bodies continue to be recovered from the debris. The scale of displacement revives concerns about where the displaced will ultimately be housed and how the region will rebuild after its second major natural disaster in three decades.
