Guanabacoa residents protest electricity and water shortages

Residents of the Guanabacoa municipality in Havana, Cuba, have staged protests in front of the local government headquarters to demand essential services including electricity, water, and food.

The demonstrations, primarily led by women and mothers with young children, were triggered by prolonged power outages lasting more than 40 consecutive hours. These blackouts have caused secondary crises, such as the lack of potable water and the inability to preserve food in high temperatures. Protesters have also engaged in 'cacerolazos' (pot-banging) in various neighborhoods to express their discontent.

During the gatherings, authorities responded by deploying police and special units to disperse the crowds. Reports indicate that at least two individuals were detained and taken into custody. In some areas, residents reportedly blocked utility workers from removing transformers due to fears that such actions would further extend the service interruptions.
