Guanajuato aquifers rise as rains boost water levels near La Purísima

Rainfall in Mexico's Guanajuato state has raised the water table in the municipal aquifers that supply local wells, the director of the Sistema Municipal de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado, Juan Andrés Balderas Torres, reported. In the area supplied by the La Purísima dam, water levels have risen about 10 metres, increasing the total depth from roughly 240 metres to 250 metres and allowing extraction from a shallower depth, which improves pump efficiency.

Balderas noted that the recent rains have also helped refill nearby reservoirs: the Mata dam is now at full capacity, the Esperanza dam exceeds 70 percent, while the Soledad dam remains low at about 10 percent. He said the uneven distribution of rain across basins explains the differing reservoir levels. The improved aquifer conditions are expected to aid water supply for the capital, though no changes in water quality are anticipated.
