Chilean authorities raid Congress and Junaeb in corruption probe
Chilean authorities have launched a major investigation into alleged corruption within the National Board for School Aid and Scholarships (Junaeb). The probe focuses on the School Feeding Program (PAE), investigating potential fraud, bribery, and influence peddling related to public bidding processes.
Simultaneous raids were conducted by the Investigative Police (PDI) at Junaeb offices and the National Congress. The investigation involves the food service company SOSER S.A., which is suspected of receiving irregular payments for meals that may not have been delivered. Authorities estimate the potential diversion of up to $15 million.
Several high-profile figures are under scrutiny, including senators Sergio Gahona and Miguel Ángel Calisto, as well as former deputy Hugo Gutiérrez. A judge has authorized the lifting of banking secrecy for several individuals and the company involved to trace financial movements dating back to 2018. SOSER S.A. has released a statement asserting that it has acted in accordance with all applicable regulations and has expressed its willingness to cooperate with the judiciary.
