Mexico political landscape shifts ahead of 2026-2027 elections

Political activity in Mexico is intensifying ahead of the 2026-2027 electoral processes. In Guanajuato, the State Electoral Tribunal invalidated a measure by the IEEG that reserved 13 municipal candidacies exclusively for women, ruling that the institute exceeded its legal authority. Governor Libia García Muñoz Ledo defended the affirmative actions, arguing they are necessary for gender equality, and indicated the state may appeal the decision.

In Chihuahua, the PRI has filed an appeal against the State Electoral Institute (IEE), claiming the body overstepped its regulatory powers regarding affirmative action implementation. Simultaneously, the PRI in Chihuahua has moved to install its Municipal Political Council for the 2026-2029 period.

In Querétaro, the PAN is preparing to announce new electoral coordination designations. Meanwhile, recent polling for the 2027 governorship shows PAN's Felifer Macías leading with a significant margin over Morena's Santiago Nieto. Additionally, Morena has filed complaints with the IEEQ against Macías for alleged premature campaign promotion through public advertising.

Other regional developments include the IEPAC in Yucatán failing to reach a consensus on appointing a head for its new Electoral Rights Defense Office, and various institutions in Querétaro signing a collaboration agreement to ensure electoral certainty and security.
