Guanajuato Electoral Tribunal overturns IEEG inclusion quotas

The State Electoral Tribunal of Guanajuato has overturned inclusion quotas previously approved by the Institute of Elections of the State of Guanajuato (IEEG). The ruling follows a legal challenge filed by the PAN and Somos parties regarding affirmative action measures designed for priority groups.

The IEEG's original guidelines required the nomination of candidates from specific groups—including persons with disabilities, Afro-Mexicans, sexual diversity, and indigenous populations—to specific positions in all 46 municipalities and the local Congress. The PAN argued that while inclusion is necessary to correct historical inequalities, the measures lacked sufficient justification and must ensure that rules remain equitable and proportional without creating exclusion for other participants.
