Guanajuato expands international tourism, trade, and education initiatives
The state of Guanajuato is advancing several international initiatives spanning tourism, trade, and education. In Japan, the Secretariat of Tourism and Identity is participating in the JATA Tourism Expo Japan 2026 to strengthen commercial ties and attract more visitors. Japan was the state's fourth largest international market in 2025, contributing over 375 million pesos in revenue.
In the agricultural sector, the Guanajuato State Foreign Trade Promotion Agency (Cofoce) led a delegation of 12 companies to McAllen and Pharr, Texas. The mission aimed to connect local producers with 18 international buyers of fresh produce, with projected sales exceeding US$3.1 million. This follows a strong first quarter in 2026, where Guanajuato recorded US$10 billion in total exports.
Additionally, Guanajuato hosted specialists from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Peru for the third edition of the “Leer a Tiempo” (Read on Time) International Literacy Day. Led by UNESCO Mexico and Instituto Natura, the event showcased the state's literacy policy, which has reportedly increased the percentage of third-grade students reaching expected reading levels from 67 to 88 percent.
