Guanajuato expands mental health network with 453 specialists

The Guanajuato Ministry of Health (SSG) has implemented a state mental health and addiction network composed of 453 specialists. This workforce includes 415 psychology professionals and 38 psychiatrists distributed across health centers, hospitals, and specialized units throughout the state's 46 municipalities.

Health Secretary Gabriel Cortés Alcalá stated that the state model focuses on early detection, psychological intervention, and close follow-up to prevent clinical cases from escalating into crises. Between 2024 and June 2026, the ministry conducted over 310,000 mental health and addiction screenings, identifying 17,288 individuals requiring professional support.

The SSG's defensive stance on its psychiatric coverage follows reports regarding the concentration of specialists in specific cities like León, Celaya, and Guanajuato capital. While the SSG manages 37 psychiatrists, other institutions also provide services, including 17 psychiatrists from the IMSS and three from the ISSSTE.
