Guanajuato forensic data shows high body counts and low identification rates

Guanajuato recorded 7,245 forensic service entries in 2025, making it the second-highest state in Mexico for such cases according to INEGI data. While the state Attorney General's Office (FGE) reports that there is no backlog in forensic services and maintains clean facilities, academic Fabrizio Lorusso notes that total accumulated unidentified remains continue to grow, citing 1,105 bodies in the state's forensic cemetery between 2020 and mid-2026.

Data regarding the State Attorney General's Office's Deceased Person Identification Unit (UIPF) reveals a significant gap in identification success. Between August 2020 and August 2026, 1,222 people visited the unit seeking information on deceased relatives, but only 54 individuals were successfully identified. The FGE stated that unsuccessful searches do not always mean a body remains unidentified in their facilities, but rather that available records did not confirm the searched individuals were ever in their custody.
