Guanajuato health services increase due to zero rejection policy

Guanajuato Health Secretary Gabriel Cortés Alcalá reported that the ‘zero rejection’ policy for emergency care has led to a 10% to 15% increase in hospital services for insured patients. This increase is observed across all 46 municipalities where the policy is active, with the highest concentration in the industrial corridor, specifically in the general hospitals of León, Irapuato, Celaya, and Salamanca.

The increased demand has placed additional pressure on the state health budget, resulting in an approximately 10% rise in health spending, particularly for treating catastrophic illnesses. The Hospital General de León has had to absorb a significant number of high-cost patients, such as those requiring cancer treatments, following a reduction in capacity at the Hospital Regional de Alta Especialidad del Bajío.
