Guanajuato implements dengue prevention and sexual education programs in schools
The state of Guanajuato is implementing two major health and education initiatives within its school system. The Secretariat of Health has incorporated 560 schools into the ‘Socially Responsible Spaces Against Dengue’ program. To date, 161 campuses have been accredited as health-promoting sites free of mosquito breeding grounds, while 399 schools have undergone interventions to reduce mosquito reproduction. The strategy, which includes the “Lava, Tapa, Voltea y Tira” (Wash, Cover, Turn, and Throw) method, aims to engage students, teachers, and families in preventing dengue.
Separately, the Secretariat of Education announced that the “En Buen Plan” sexual education model will be implemented in January for all third-year secondary school students in Guanajuato. This program, approved by the local Congress last June, includes provisions for menstrual health to ensure students can manage their periods with dignity and to combat bullying related to menstruation. Officials stated that technical guides for teachers are being finalized following successful testing of the model.
