Guanajuato lawmakers debate child crime prosecutor bill, wider sidewalks

State legislators from the National Action Party (PAN) in Guanajuato sought information on the status of initiatives in the Justice Commission, focusing on a proposal to create a specialized prosecutor for crimes against children and adolescents. The 180‑day deadline for the bill expired, and PAN members voted against extending the period, leading to the proposal’s automatic archiving unless a one‑time extension is granted. PAN deputy Rolando Alcántar Rojas altered the agenda to remove the item, while deputy Karol Jared González Márquez argued the extension was effective and requested technical details from the commission’s secretariat. She noted, "Guanajuato is one of the states where the most children and adolescents are murdered… this situation creates the need for specialized investigation."

In the municipality of Purísima del Rincón, PAN councilor David Alberto Ortiz Trillo introduced a proposal to increase the minimum width of sidewalks in new urban developments from two to three metres. The amendment aims to improve accessibility for pedestrians, people with disabilities, and wheelchair users, and to allow adequate space for urban trees. The proposal sparked debate over mobility, tree preservation, and enforcement of traffic regulations, receiving support from a PVEM councilor and raising concerns about existing narrow sidewalks in the town centre.
