Guanajuato legislature approves social reforms and labor proposals
The Congress of Guanajuato has approved several legislative reforms aimed at improving social equality and public services. These modifications, promoted by the National Action Party (PAN), include updates to the State Youth Law to incorporate an intersectional approach. This change requires state and municipal authorities to consider how factors such as rural living, disabilities, or socio-economic vulnerability impact a young person's access to opportunities.
Separately, a legislative initiative has been proposed by the Movimiento Ciudadano caucus to improve labor conditions for elderly volunteer baggers in supermarkets, often referred to as ‘cerillitos’. Representative Rodrigo González Zaragoza noted that a survey showed 100% of these workers rely solely on tips without a fixed salary. The proposal seeks to ensure these senior citizens receive a base wage and access to social security, including medical services and housing funds.
