Mexican court sentences Isla Mujeres man to 37 years for femicide
A court in Isla Mujeres sentenced Jimy José Catzín Sanguino to 37 years and six months in prison for the femicide of his former partner. The victim was stabbed during an argument on 26 April 2020, sustaining multiple wounds that caused hemorrhagic shock and death.
The sentencing, issued in May 2026, also ordered Catzín to pay a fine of 195,480 pesos and 623,493.20 pesos in restitution for material damages. The judgment follows a trial that relied on testimonial, expert and forensic evidence presented by the State Attorney General’s Office.
The case underscores Mexico’s ongoing efforts to combat gender‑based violence and enforce severe penalties for femicide.
