Guandu Water System maintenance to affect Rio de Janeiro supply
Cedae will perform annual preventive maintenance on the Guandu Water System starting at 4:00 AM on Tuesday, November 3. The operation aims to prepare the treatment station for the summer season, a period of higher water consumption.
Water production will be suspended for the municipalities of Rio de Janeiro, Belford Roxo, Duque de Caxias, Mesquita, Nilópolis, Nova Iguaçu, Queimados, and São João de Meriti. The maintenance is expected to conclude by 4:00 AM on Wednesday, November 4. Following the completion of services, production will resume gradually.
Concessionaires such as Águas do Rio, Rio + Saneamento, and Iguá have noted that water supply normalization may take up to 72 hours after production resumes, particularly in elevated areas or at the ends of distribution networks. Water trucks will be prioritized for hospitals and emergency units.
The Guandu Water Treatment Plant, which holds a Guinness World Record as the largest continuous water treatment station, produces an average of 43,000 liters of water per second, serving approximately 9 million people.
