Guangdong man dies suddenly from liver tumor rupture during running
A 37-year-old man in Guangdong, China, died suddenly while maintaining a regular routine of running 5km every morning. While he was perceived as a symbol of a healthy lifestyle, an autopsy revealed he was suffering from terminal liver cancer.
The cause of death was identified as Spontaneous HCC Rupture, a complication where a liver tumor ruptures due to increased abdominal pressure during high-intensity exercise. This led to massive internal bleeding, hemorrhagic shock, and cardiac arrest.
Dr. Chen Huang from Nanfang Medical University noted that while exercise is beneficial, physical activity that exceeds the body's tolerance levels can have adverse effects. High-intensity running can trigger intense catabolism and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), placing significant stress on the liver's antioxidant enzymes.
