Guangdong yacht southbound initiative begins with first five vessels arriving in Hong Kong
The “Guangdong Yacht Southbound” initiative commenced its maiden voyage with five mainland yachts arriving in Hong Kong from Zhuhai, Nansha, and Shenzhen. The inaugural group included vessels such as “Shenwei 70,” “Yunxun,” and “Shenhangyun No. 2.”
Legislative Council member Chu Lap-wai noted that while existing supply facilities are sufficient for the current low volume of visiting yachts, long-term planning is essential. He recommended the development of permanent infrastructure, including water and charging stations at anchorage areas, to support a normalized yachting economy.
To maximize economic benefits, Chu suggested that the tourism industry and the Hong Kong Tourism Board promote “island hopping” tours to locations like Tai O, Lamma Island, and Cheung Chau. He proposed combining natural sightseeing with urban consumption in districts like Central and Causeway Bay, as well as offering specialized “one-day chartered tours” with dedicated guides and seamless land transport to attract high-spending visitors.
