Guangxi, China Floods Kill at Least Four and Displace Tens of Thousands After Six‑Lan Reservoir Breach

Typhoon "Meschak" battered China’s Guangxi region in early July 2026, causing extreme rainfall that forced multiple reservoirs to overflow. The Six‑Lan Reservoir in Nanning’s Hengxian County suffered a 50‑metre breach, releasing floodwaters that swept downstream villages and left many homes submerged.

Official figures released after two emergency briefings reported at least four deaths, eight people missing and 84,700 residents affected. More than 54,000 people had been relocated, with the remaining hundreds awaiting evacuation. President Xi Jinping issued a directive ordering full mobilization of rescue, medical treatment and shelter efforts.

Rescue operations involved thousands of soldiers, police and volunteers, supported by heavy‑duty drones that airdropped food, water and medicine to isolated “island” villages. Local authorities also dispatched excavators to clear debris, while the China Railway Nanning Bureau suspended train service on the Nanning–Guangxi line for safety.

Villagers described the scene: "三岔、六藍水庫都崩了…不少人被沖走了" ("Both Sancha and Six‑Lan reservoirs collapsed… many people were swept away"). The disaster prompted a joint emergency work team from the Ministry of Emergency Management, the Water Resources Ministry and the central government to oversee flood control and relief measures.
