Guangzhou and Hong Kong report strong tourism during Golden Week
During the National Day Golden Week, major Chinese tourism hubs reported significant activity. Guangzhou welcomed 16.05 million tourists, generating 14.5 billion yuan in cultural tourism consumption, representing a year-on-year increase of 5.5% and 5.9% respectively. The city hosted over 2,000 cultural and tourism activities, ranging from light shows along the Pearl River to rural tourism, which saw over 6.96 million visitors.
In Hong Kong, approximately 1.41 million visitors from mainland China arrived during the seven-day holiday. This figure exceeded government estimates of 1.29 million and marked the second-highest number for the same period in history. The influx boosted retail sectors, particularly dried seafood, as lower wholesale prices made products like cordyceps and sea cucumber more attractive to shoppers. Industry observers noted that while tourist volumes are high, there is a continued need to convert foot traffic into sustained economic consumption through diverse cultural products.
