Guangzhou implements randomized class assignments for students
Guangzhou has implemented a new policy in several districts to standardize the assignment of first-grade and seventh-grade students. Under this system, students and teaching teams are assigned to classes through a randomized process. The results are generated on-site and locked immediately to prevent manual adjustments based on academic performance or personal connections.
While the measure aims to ensure formal equality by eliminating the distinction between “elite” and “ordinary” classes within the same school, it has prompted discussions regarding the broader nature of educational equity. Critics note that while randomization addresses class placement, the reliance on standardized testing may still narrow the definition of talent and favor families with the resources to pursue international curricula or non-standardized skills.
