Guangzhou police prevent 10.8 billion VND investment fraud
Police in the Huangpu District of Guangzhou, China, successfully prevented an investment fraud attempt involving 2.8 million NDT (approximately 10.8 billion VND). The intervention occurred after bank staff flagged suspicious activity when a customer, identified as Hou, scheduled a large withdrawal without a clear purpose.
Authorities suspected Hou had fallen victim to an online investment scam, a scheme where victims are lured into fake investment channels and then pressured to withdraw large sums of cash to re-deposit into the fraudulent system. Although Hou initially attempted to hide the true purpose of the funds by claiming they were for debt repayment, police managed to convince her to temporarily halt the withdrawal.
Investigations revealed that Hou had previously activated high-level fraud risk alerts. Despite initial resistance and threats to withdraw the money in smaller daily increments to bypass police intervention, the funds were successfully protected from the scammers.
