Guantánamo implements community solar charging centers

In the Guantánamo province of Cuba, approximately 30 community charging centers are being constructed to mitigate energy shortages caused by the United States' economic and energy blockade. At least five centers are already operational in the municipalities of Maisi, Imías, and Guantánamo.

These centers utilize repurposed shipping containers equipped with 400-watt solar panel kits, three inverters, and four 15-kilowatt batteries. They provide essential services including cooking food, charging mobile phones, lamps, fans, and electric transport such as motorbikes and tricycles.

In the San Justo community, administrators noted that while certain services like charging motorbikes incur a fee, essential items like fans and lamps are provided free of charge for vulnerable populations, including children and the elderly. The centers also offer refrigeration services to prevent food spoilage.
