Guantánamo municipality issues health alert over rising fever cases

The Manuel Tames municipality in Guantánamo is under a health alert following the report of 23 fever cases this week. Of these, 14 cases were identified in the Manuel Tames health area and nine in the Jamaica area. Health officials are closely monitoring the situation for potential dengue transmission.

Dr. Georvis Castellanos Ramírez of the municipal Hygiene department identified the Manuel Tames health area as the most challenging zone. Authorities have noted that accumulated water in containers such as low tanks, bottles, and tires provides breeding grounds for the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

In addition to mosquito breeding sites, the municipality is struggling with an increase in solid waste dumps. These micro-dumps attract rodents, cockroaches, and other disease carriers. While sanitation teams and local residents are working to eliminate these sites, officials noted that waste often reappears after cleaning efforts.

Other municipalities in the Guantánamo region, including Imías, Baracoa, and Guantánamo, are experiencing active dengue transmission, while El Salvador and San Antonio del Sur remain under surveillance due to rising fever cases.
