Guaraní traditions mark the arrival of Karaí Octubre
In the Guaraní regions of Northeast Argentina and Paraguay, traditions surrounding the myth of Karaí Octubre are being observed to ensure prosperity and ward off scarcity. According to Guaraní cosmogony, the figure of Karaí—a disheveled mythological being—inspects households to see if they have been industrious and prepared for the transition between winter reserves and new harvests.
Families follow the tradition by preparing abundant, caloric meals to share with neighbors and visitors. Providing a generous table is believed to earn the ‘blessing of the golden ear’ and economic fortune, while failing to show foresight is said to result in drought and misery.
In Corrientes, the local municipality organized cultural events to celebrate the legend. Activities included guided tours at the Casa Molinas museum, musical performances by the Ballet Municipal 7 Corrientes, and the communal sharing of traditional dishes such as mbaipy and rice with chicken to fulfill the ritual requirements of the myth.
