Guarani Kaiowá territory faces alleged water poisoning investigation

Federal Deputy Célia Xakriabá has requested formal investigations into the alleged poisoning of water supplies in the Guarani Kaiowá indigenous territory in Mato Grosso do Sul. The reports of contamination emerged following political tensions after the presidential elections.

A WhatsApp audio recording serves as a key piece of evidence, in which an individual reportedly stated the need to ‘kill these pests through the water’. The Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (Apib) has also filed a formal complaint regarding the incident.

The Guarani Kaiowá community faces chronic water scarcity and currently relies on water trucks for potable water. Authorities, including the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples, the Federal Public Ministry, and the Superior Electoral Court, have been notified.

In a joint note, the Ministries of Indigenous Peoples, Human Rights and Citizenship, and Racial Equality also called for investigations, noting they are monitoring reports of violence against Quilombola and traditional religious communities following the second round of elections.
