GNR conducts over 400 mountain rescue operations since 2024

The Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) has conducted over 400 search and rescue operations in mountainous regions since 2024. These interventions are carried out by the specialized Emergency Protection and Rescue Unit (UEPS) across Serra da Estrela, Gerês, and Madeira.

In Serra da Estrela, the GNR recorded 282 operations, primarily involving road accidents and driver assistance. In Gerês, 128 operations were performed, mostly focused on rescue and first aid. Madeira accounted for 25 operations, largely involving search missions.

Recent individual incidents include the successful rescue of a 93-year-old man in Mogadouro, found via drone after being reported missing, and the assistance of a Spanish hiker in Serra da Estrela who was suffering from dehydration. The GNR advises outdoor enthusiasts to carry essential supplies, such as water, food, a first aid kit, and a charged mobile phone, and to avoid hiking alone.
