Guardia Civil arrests two after high-speed chase with stolen copper

Two individuals were arrested by the Guardia Civil following a high-speed pursuit on the A-6 highway. The incident began on September 7 when agents from the Astorga Traffic Detachment identified a van driving without a valid technical vehicle inspection (ITV).

Upon being signaled to stop, the driver ignored acoustic and light warnings and engaged in dangerous evasive maneuvers, endangering other motorists. The chase ended near kilometer 0.5 of the LE-125 road, where officers successfully intercepted the vehicle.

Inside the van, authorities discovered approximately 100 kilograms of copper wiring contained in five sacks, along with cutting tools and fuels likely intended for burning the metal's insulation. As the occupants could not provide proof of the material's legal origin, they were detained on suspicion of theft or robbery of copper wiring. The vehicle and suspects were taken to the La Bañeza station for further legal proceedings.
