Guardia Civil Lieutenant General faces corruption trial in Spain
The trial for the ‘Cuarteles case’ has commenced at the Audiencia Provincial de Madrid, marking the first time a retired Lieutenant General of the Guardia Civil, Pedro Vázquez Jarava, faces trial for corruption in Spain.
The prosecution alleges that between 2014 and 2019, Jarava used his position to favor businessman Ángel Ramón Tejera de León, also known as ‘Mon,’ in the awarding of maintenance and waterproofing contracts for at least 13 Guardia Civil barracks across Spain. In exchange, the businessman allegedly provided Jarava and his family with cash, paid trips, and tickets to Champions League finals.
The Fiscalía is seeking a one-year prison sentence for both defendants on charges of bribery. The defense has contested the investigation, accusing the Internal Affairs Service of acting with bias. The case involves approximately 120 contracts totaling roughly 3.3 million euros, with allegations that some works were poorly executed or left unfinished.
