Guardia Civil cracks down on drunk cyclist and illegal oyster harvest in Spain

Just five minutes after a national alcohol‑and‑drugs traffic campaign began, the Guardia Civil traffic unit in Ponte do Porto, Camariñas, stopped a lone cyclist. Tests showed a blood‑alcohol level of 0.94 mg/L on the first breath test and 1.04 mg/L on the mandatory second test, far above the 0.25 mg/L limit for cyclists. Authorities issued a proposed administrative fine of €1,000 and immobilised the bicycle.

Earlier that Saturday morning, Guardia Civil officers in Lugo intercepted two residents of Ponferrada who were illegally extracting 60 kg of curved oysters from the Covas beach pier in Viveiro, an area designated as a C‑class zone where mariculture is forbidden. The men were charged with administrative offences under the Galician Fisheries and Shellfish Law, their equipment seized, and the live oysters were returned to the sea.
