Guardia Civil dismantles reptile trafficking ring in Castellón

The Guardia Civil has dismantled an organized crime network involved in the illegal trafficking of protected reptiles in the Castellón province, specifically in Jérica and Sot de Ferrer. The operation resulted in the seizure of 209 reptiles, 110 of which are protected under various CITES levels. Among the confiscated animals was an endangered iguana endemic to the Fiji Islands.

Three individuals—two men aged 48 and 51, and a woman aged 37—were arrested. The suspects allegedly used a legitimate animal shipping company as a front to facilitate the illicit trade. They reportedly utilized contacts in America, Africa, and Asia to source animals directly from their natural habitats before transporting them to European markets.

During searches, authorities seized breeding equipment, including incubators and terrariums, indicating clandestine breeding activities. Additionally, officers confiscated unlicensed firearms, ammunition, electronic devices, and documentation. The suspects face charges including membership in a criminal organization, crimes against fauna, smuggling, money laundering, and illegal possession of weapons.
