Guardia Civil drug unit chief in Segovia imprisoned

Miguel Ángel Barbero, the head of the Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Team (EDOA) of the Guardia Civil in Segovia, has been placed in provisional imprisonment without bail. The decision was issued by the Segovia Court of Instance following an investigation into alleged involvement in drug trafficking, bribery, revelation of secrets, and membership in a criminal group.

Barbero was arrested at his residence within the Segovia Provincial Command. The operation is part of a broader investigation coordinated by the Guardia Civil's Internal Affairs and central services in Madrid, which has been active since April 2026. In addition to Barbero, three other individuals were detained and ordered into provisional imprisonment. These three individuals are not members of the state security forces and face charges including drug trafficking, bribery, money laundering, and criminal group membership.

This marks the second time Barbero has faced such allegations. In May 2017, he was arrested on similar charges, including drug trafficking and omission of the duty to prosecute crimes. However, that case was definitively dismissed by the Segovia Court in July 2018, after which he was exonerated and reinstated to his position, eventually rising to the rank of brigadier.
