Guardia Civil investigates extreme speed violations on Spanish highways

The Spanish Guardia Civil opened criminal investigations into two drivers who vastly exceeded speed limits on major roads. On the A‑73 near Aguilar de Campoo in Palencia, a vehicle was recorded traveling at 205 km/h in a 100 km/h zone during a routine speed, alcohol and drug checkpoint. The driver faces charges under article 379.1 of the Penal Code, which can carry three to six months imprisonment, fines, community service and a driving ban.

In a separate incident on the CA‑31 autovía in El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz, a motorcyclist was clocked at 171 km/h where the limit is 80 km/h. The detection occurred during a special speed‑control operation linked to the Spanish Grand Prix of Motorcycling. The rider is likewise being investigated for a traffic‑safety offence with similar possible penalties.
