Guardia Civil warns of banking fraud via pirated IPTV apps
The Spanish Guardia Civil has issued a warning regarding the use of pirated IPTV applications used to watch football and other paid content for free. Authorities state that these applications, which are often downloaded from sources outside official stores like Google Play or the App Store, frequently contain fraudulent software and malware.
Cybercriminals use these apps as a vector for banking fraud. The malware can operate in the background to spy on device activity or overlay fake interfaces that mimic legitimate banking applications. By superimposing these fraudulent screens, attackers can capture sensitive information, including passwords and biometric data, as users attempt to access their accounts.
The Guardia Civil emphasized the severity of the risk, stating that ‘saving the cost of a subscription can cost you all your life savings.’ This shift marks a transition where sports piracy is no longer just an issue of intellectual property rights, but a significant tool for sophisticated financial cyberattacks.
