Marco Sorrentino, anti-mafia colonel, killed in head-on collision

Marco Sorrentino, a 50-year-old colonel of the Guardia di Finanza, died following a devastating head-on collision in Sasso Marconi, near Bologna. Sorrentino was serving with the Central Service for Investigation of Organized Crime (Scico) at the time of the accident.

The incident occurred around 11:30 AM on the R43 connector road. Sorrentino was traveling in a large-displacement service vehicle with two colleagues, an operational deputy commander and a marshal, when the vehicle collided with a Peugeot driven by a 22-year-old woman. Preliminary reports suggest the collision may have been caused by a vehicle crossing into the opposite lane.

Both colleagues and the driver of the other vehicle were transported to a hospital in Bologna with injuries reported as non-serious. Emergency responders, including ambulances, an air medic, and firefighters, attended the scene to extricate the occupants from the wreckage. The local highway police are conducting investigations to determine the exact cause and responsibility for the crash.
