Guardia di Finanza introduces new drug-detection dog in Agrigento

The Guardia di Finanza in Agrigento has introduced a new drug-detection dog named Nolly to its operational units. A young German Shepherd, Nolly completed specialized training at the Guardia di Finanza's breeding and training course in Castiglione del Lago, Perugia, before being deployed to Sicily.

Nolly will work alongside Kratos, an experienced drug-detection dog already serving in the Agrigento Group, who has been instrumental in previous large-scale drug seizures. The addition of the new canine unit and its handler is intended to strengthen efforts against the possession and trafficking of illegal substances, particularly as tourist numbers increase in the province during the summer season.

The Guardia di Finanza maintains a 70-year tradition in canine services and is noted as the only European police force that breeds and trains its own dogs from birth. These units are trained to detect various substances, including marijuana, hashish, heroin, and cocaine, through a training process that utilizes natural instincts and positive reinforcement.
