Guarulhos Airport seizure: 50 wild bird eggs intercepted
Authorities at Guarulhos International Airport intercepted 50 wild bird eggs belonging to the psittacidae family, which includes species such as macaws, parrots, and parakeets. The seizures occurred during two separate operations aimed at combating international wildlife trafficking.
On October 1, 34 eggs were discovered in the luggage of a passenger traveling to China via Doha. On October 4, an additional 16 eggs were found in the suitcase of a traveler heading to Vietnam. The eggs were transferred to the São Paulo Wildlife Screening and Rehabilitation Center (Cetras-SP) for specialized care.
Because the eggs were in an advanced stage of development, ten chicks have already hatched and are receiving intensive care in animal treatment units. The remaining eggs are being kept in incubators under strictly controlled temperature and humidity levels to facilitate hatching. Experts noted that the inadequate transport conditions used by traffickers pose a significant risk to the survival of these animals and threaten native biodiversity.
