Águas de Portugal hit by complex cyberattack

Portugal’s water utility group Águas de Portugal confirmed that several of its companies have been targeted by a highly sophisticated cyberattack. The breach forced the company’s website offline and caused temporary suspension of some administrative processes and customer‑contact channels, though water supply, quality and sanitation services remain uninterrupted. In response, Águas de Portugal activated its emergency procedures, involving the Polícia Judiciária and the Centro Nacional de Cibersegurança, and began gradual recovery and system replacement. As a precaution, public service points in Vieira do Minho were closed and many staff were barred from using computers until the threat is contained. The incident follows a series of recent cyber incidents in Portugal, including attacks on a university, a regional metro system and a health authority, and mirrors reports of water‑system attacks in several U.S. states attributed to Iranian actors.
