Águas do Ribatejo announces €6 million wastewater plant upgrades

Águas do Ribatejo has launched public tenders for a six-million-euro investment to rehabilitate three wastewater treatment plants (ETAR) in Muge, Benfica do Ribatejo, and Glória do Ribatejo. The project aims to modernize aging infrastructure that has been in operation for several decades.

Director-General Miguel Carrinho stated that these interventions are essential to ensure service quality for approximately 140,000 people across seven municipalities in the Lezíria do Tejo region. The upgrades are designed to increase capacity and meet modern environmental standards.

In Muge, the project will address technological limitations regarding effluent disinfection, which is critical as discharge flows into sensitive areas of the Tagus River. In Benfica do Ribatejo, the rehabilitation will be so extensive that it will effectively function as a near-total replacement of the facility to handle increased flow volumes from the expanded sanitation network.
