Guatemala: 393,468 citizens to reach age of majority in 2026

According to data from the National Registry of Persons (RENAP), 393,468 Guatemalans are expected to reach the age of majority in 2026. This represents an increase of approximately 9,556 people, or 2.5%, compared to the 383,912 individuals who turned 18 in 2025.

Of those reaching adulthood in 2026, 194,587 are women and 198,881 are men. The highest concentration of new adults is located in the department of Guatemala, with 82,728 individuals, followed by Alta Verapaz, Huehuetenango, Quiché, and San Marcos.

Reaching age 18 in Guatemala grants the capacity to exercise civil rights and assume legal obligations under Article 8 of the Civil Code. To facilitate this transition, RENAP allows individuals who are 17 years old to apply for their Personal Identification Document (DPI) in advance, though the document is only issued once they reach the legal age.
