Guatemala and Honduras advance Motagua River Basin environmental cooperation

Guatemala and Honduras are advancing a binational environmental management strategy focused on the recovery of the Motagua River Basin. This cooperation aims to implement forest restoration, protect water recharge zones, and recover vital ecosystems within the shared hydrological system.

The initiative is primarily being executed through the Integrated Environmental Management Project of the Motagua River Basin. This work is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and receives funding from the Global Environment Facility.

Building on a Memorandum of Understanding signed in March 2020, technical teams from both nations recently conducted field assessments in Honduras. These sessions focused on monitoring pilot projects for reforestation, hydrological-forest restoration, and measures to safeguard strategic water availability zones.
