Guatemala and Mexico mobilize youth for reforestation and public‑space clean‑up

In Cantel, Quetzaltenango, journalists, public agencies and private firms joined a reforestation drive, planting 200 pine and cypress trees on municipal land. The event was part of the national #ReforestoXGuate challenge within the Sembrando Huella 2026 program led by the Instituto Nacional de Bosques (INAB). INAB subregional chief Guillermo Monterosa said, “Climate change is affecting the whole country and Guatemala is one of the most vulnerable; we are adapting by planting new forest cover for future generations.”

Meanwhile, more than 32,000 young people took part in the National “Tequios por la Transformación y Cortos por la Paz” campaign across 73 municipalities of the State of Mexico. Coordinated by the Instituto Mexiquense de la Juventud (IMEJ) and the Instituto Mexicano de la Juventud (IMJUVE), participants cleaned parks, rehabilitated community spaces and carried out reforestation and cultural activities. IMEJ director Sergio Jassiel Zamora López led efforts in Nezahualcótl and other towns, underscoring the state government's commitment to youth engagement and public‑space stewardship.
