Guatemala and Mexico sign forest fire prevention agreement
Guatemala and Mexico have signed a ten-year bilateral agreement to prevent and combat forest fires. The memorandum of understanding was signed by Guatemala’s National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) and Mexico’s National Forestry Commission (Conafor).
The agreement establishes a framework for cooperation, including the exchange of scientific information, technical knowledge, and protocols to detect and manage fires. It aims to protect the environment and reduce the impact of wildfires on both nations. Key components include the transfer of specialists, the development of joint exercises, and the creation of mechanisms for requesting mutual assistance during emergencies.
Additionally, the pact seeks to foster a culture of prevention through community participation. This cooperation comes as regional temperatures rise and rainfall decreases, conditions that increase the risk of fire propagation in areas such as the Central Highlands, the Northern region, and the Eastern Valleys.
