Guatemala begins repairs on Periférico-Aguilar Batres bridge

Repair and reinforcement work has commenced on the Periférico-Aguilar Batres bridge in Zone 11 of Guatemala City. The project, managed by the Unidad Ejecutora de Conservación Vial (Covial), aims to address structural damage and extend the bridge's lifespan.

Technical interventions include the application of carbon fiber, epoxy injections in a beam and diaphragm that are currently propped up, the demolition of damaged concrete, and the reinforcement of the steel structure. Due to the complex working conditions, authorities estimate the repairs will take between six and eight weeks, potentially concluding in December.

Covial warned that the structure exhibits general structural fatigue. While these current measures are intended to maintain safe operations, the Municipality of Guatemala must develop a definitive long-term solution to address the underlying issues. To mitigate traffic disruptions caused by the work, authorities have implemented a reversible lane in the area.
