Guatemala celebrates national marimba through festivals

Guatemala is celebrating its national instrument through significant cultural events. The X Patrio Festival recently featured performances by the Marimba de Concierto de Bellas Artes, Marimba Guatemala, and the Ballet Moderno y Folklórico at the Miguel Ángel Asturias Cultural Center. The program included traditional music and a special performance of ‘Katampé’, a dance based on a San Juan Comalapa ceremony.

Looking ahead, the inaugural Guatemala Marimba Fest is scheduled for September 6 to 12, 2026. The seven-day event will take place in Guatemala City and Antigua Guatemala, featuring free concerts, masterclasses, workshops, and academic conferences. The festival will host international delegations from Colombia, Spain, and Mexico to explore the traditions and evolving global role of the marimba.
