Central and South America face flooding and water crises due to heavy rains

Heavy rainfall and tropical waves have triggered widespread flooding and water management challenges across Central and South America.

In Ecuador, intense rains have caused six rivers in the coastal provinces of Esmeraldas and Guayas to overflow. The Esmeraldas province has seen four of these rivers overflow, including the Pambil, Onzole, and Cayapas. Flooding has impacted various communities, leading to road closures and damage to homes and crops.

In Costa Rica, the passage of tropical wave No. 47 has flooded more than 400 homes. The National Emergency Commission (CNE) warned of highly saturated soils, particularly in the Central Valley, increasing the risk of further incidents.

In Honduras, the water supply for the Central District remains under pressure. While the Los Laureles reservoir has seen a slight recovery to 28.89% capacity, the La Concepción reservoir remains in a critical state below 25% capacity. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as they anticipate a long dry period ahead.
