Cali imposes dry law, bans drones and deploys 11,000 security forces for presidential inauguration
Ahead of the presidential inauguration on 7 August, Cali’s municipal authorities announced a series of security measures. A dry‑law decree bans the sale, distribution and consumption of alcoholic beverages, the sale of fuel in informal containers, moving services and the transport of construction debris across the city’s 22 communes and 15 districts from 06:00 a.m. to 08:00 p.m. on the inauguration day. The same decree also restricts the use of drones in Cali and nearby municipalities (Yumbo, Jamundí, Candelaria and Palmira) from 12:00 a.m. on 6 August until 11:59 p.m. on 8 August, prohibiting recreational, commercial and journalistic flights. In parallel, the national defence ministry confirmed that more than 11 000 military and police personnel – including special‑operations, anti‑explosives, traffic, aerial and river units – will be deployed to secure the capital and its metropolitan area. The deployment was coordinated by Defence Minister Angélica Verbel López, the mayor Alejandro Eder, and security secretary Jairo García Guerrero. The combined restrictions and security presence aim to ensure a peaceful, orderly transfer of power and to protect national and international delegations attending the ceremony.
