Guatemala City traffic rises amid vehicle growth and concerts
Guatemala City is facing significant traffic challenges due to a rapid increase in the vehicle fleet and high volumes of daily commuters. According to Amílcar Montejo of Emetra, the vehicle fleet in the Guatemala department grew by approximately 400,000 units in nine months, rising from 2.6 million in January to 3 million by early October. This represents an average monthly increase of 40,000 vehicles.
In addition to local growth, the capital experiences a massive daily influx of vehicles from neighboring municipalities. Estimates suggest 713,000 private vehicles enter and exit the city daily. The highest volumes originate from Mixco (30%), Santa Catarina Pinula (28%), Villa Nueva (15%), Villa Canales (15%), and Chinautla (12%).
Mobility concerns are expected to intensify this week due to several major concerts scheduled in the city. Performances by artists such as Tini, Humbe, and the Finnish band The Rasmus are expected to increase vehicular load around venues like the Parque de la Industria and Explanada 5, potentially complicating transit in various sectors.
