Guatemala City transit police report frequent pedestrian accidents

The Municipal Transit Police (PMT) in Guatemala City reported that between four and seven pedestrians are struck by vehicles monthly near pedestrian overpasses. Spokesperson Amílcar Montejo noted that many citizens choose to cross busy roads instead of using the more than 135 strategically placed walkways.

High-risk sectors identified by the PMT include Zones 7 and 11, as well as the Roosevelt and San Juan roads, specifically near 23rd Avenue. Additionally, frequent emergencies involving pedestrians occur in Zone 1 near the National Palace, Congress, and Supreme Court, as well as at the La Cuchilla underpass in San Antonio, Zone 6. Authorities are urging residents to use designated pedestrian bridges or zebra crossings to mitigate these risks.
